Washington County, Georgia was formed on February 25, 1784 from lands of the Creek Cession of 1783. It lies in eastern-central Georgia with the county seat of government in Sandersville. As Georgia's tenth county, it is the first and only geographical district in the United States to be named after George Washington while he was still recognized a General Washington, before he became president.
From the original Washington County was formed the subsequent Georgia counties of Greene (1786), Hancock (1793), Montgomery (1793) and Johnson (1858).
Washington County was a frontier county almost entirely settled by Revolutionary War veterans who were awarded land grants for their service.
Warthen was the first settlement in the county, founded as the site of the superior courts and the jail. In 1796 the Georgia legislature named Sandersville (originally Saunders Crossroads), which was situated at the crossing of two Indian trails, the county seat. Townships in the county today include Davisboro, Deepstep, Harrison, Oconee, Riddleville, Sandersville, Tennille, and Warthen.
In 1855 and 1864 the county courthouse building was destroyed by fire, thus destroying much of the county records for Washington County, prior to 1864. All wills and potentially other significant genealogical resources prior to 1864 are lost. However, a surprising wealth of records and resources can still be found.
