GETTING STARTED ONLINE


The following are links to recommended free and easy genealogy websites to help you get started on your research. You will find various general genealogical information and search sites, plus databases. Of course there are also links to Irish genealogical websites. There will also be links to some Arizona Libraries. Lastly are some Arizona general and Irish genealogy organizations where you can attend monthly meetings and special seminars to learn how to do genealogy and meet others who share the passion. There are pay websites, but I am not providing that information here. In many cases those can be found accessible from your local area library.

This Irish Government supported, official web site, is dedicated to helping you in your search for records of family history for past generations. It has great educational material, as well as a wealth of online resources.


Irish Family History Foundation

Search Irish Birth, Marriage and Death Records. Over 20 Million Irish Family History Records online. Provided by the Irish Family History Foundation.


The National Archives of Ireland

This official website for the National Archives of Ireland has a great Genealogy section, with helpful instructional resources as well as a wealth of records online.

FamilySearch

From the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, Utah (LDS), this site includes various databases, research tips, resources, downloaded genealogies, etc., as well as online catalog of the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, Utah, the largest genealogy library in the world.


Rootsweb

This site consists of several databases, including downloaded genealogy databases. Also included are links to mailing lists and message boards, with information on how to connect or access archives of previous postings. And there are links to many genealogy websites that are hosted for free by Rootsweb.


USGenWeb

Browse by U.S. state and county for information on history and resources, including submitted genealogies, record abstracts, research tips and local organizations, etc.


WorldGenWeb

An international version of the USGenWeb. Browse for information, history, resources, record abstracts, research tips and more for nations and ethnic groups around the world.


GenForum

Message Boards where you can post queries or read past discussions on various surnames, national and international regions, and specific genealogy topics and research techniques.


Cyndi's List

A website that successfully organizes and categorizes all genealogy websites on the internet by subject and includes links to those sites.


Find-A-Grave

The name pretty much tells it all. Find the grave for almost anyone anywhere. Search over 103 million known marked graves, with grave photos, detailed biographical information, family relations, and cemetery information.


United States National Archives

The home page for the National Archives and Records Administration of the United States Government. Click on the link to the pages for Genealogists/Family Historians. Provides a wealth of information for Genealogists on types of records, availability, databases, lessons, links, etc. Create an account and order copies of records directly from the NARA online.

The National Archives of Ireland

This official website for the National Archives of Ireland has a great Genealogy section, with helpful instructional resources as well as a wealth of records online.





ARIZONA GENEALOGY LIBRARIES


McClelland Irish Library

The McClelland Irish Library, located on Central Avenue in downtown Phoenix, adjacent to the Irish Cultural Center, in the Margaret T. Hance Park. The three-story building houses 5,000 books from Irish authors and poets and genealogical research tools. It includes an ongoing exhibit of The Book of Kells plus several reading rooms and computer resources to access the library catalog and databases. The three-story building resembles a traditional 12th century Norman castle from the Emerald Isle.


Mesa, Arizona Regional Family History Center

Information about the local LDS Genealogy Research Center, a branch of Family History Library in Salt Lake, including some databases, various resources and most significantly their online catalog.


Arizona State Library, Archives and Public Records

The Arizona State Library and Archives has a wealth of genealogy resources and services. The genealogy collection is not limited to Arizona resources, and in fact has a wide array of materials from across the United States, with some international resources as well.

The Irish Ancestral Research Association

TIARA (The Irish Ancestral Research Association) is a nonprofit organization established to develop and promote the growth, study and exchange of ideas among people and organizations interested in Irish genealogical and historical research and education. Our Boston, Massachusetts monthly meetings educate and entertain our members, as well as foster interaction with other Irish researchers. We do NOT provide individual genealogical research services.

ARIZONA GENEALOGY ORGANIZATIONS


Family History Society of Arizona

A Phoenix area genealogical society with various chapters, meetings, events and other activities. They publish a monthly newsletter, buy books for the Arizona State Library and Archives genealogy collection, and have annual seminars with notable presenters from across the country.


Arizona State Genealogical Society

A Southern Arizona genealogical society which has regular meetings in Tucson, plus various other events and activities, include publishing Arizona records and resource materials.


AzGAB

A state organization that helps to coordinate all statewide genealogical societies, heritage societies, and historical groups. Website includes a listing of such Arizona societies and a Calendar of events statewide, plus other projects and information.
